So, Reddit Has Games Now...
Well, this is definitely something... Apparently, Reddit added games to their platform a while ago. And by "a while ago" I mean almost five months ago as of writing. I used to think of myself as a pretty perceptive person, but the fact that I didn't even notice this stupid little new "GAMES ON REDDIT" section in the sidebar until just a few hours ago really blows a hole in that. Though that could also be because I mainly use Old Reddit (I still don't quite understand how anybody can stomach their new god-awful UI). I just can't fathom why exactly this exists. I can only guess that they hopped on the bandwagon after seeing web sites like Netflix and YouTube add games to their own platforms, but were those projects even successful to begin with? Seriously, who is the person that's playing Sonic Mania on Netflix of all things? I thought we learned our lesson after Google Stadia crashed and burned, that "streaming" video games over the internet is a stupid idea. And don't even get me started on those YouTube "Playables"! They're just a bunch of cheap mobile games (though I did notice they managed to get some actual titles like Cut The Rope and Pac-Man, somehow) with about as much substance as a military ration bar, and that's an insult to the ration bar. But alas, companies will keep ruining their platforms by trying to force as much useless garbage as possible. It seems like nowadays, everybody wants to be the centralised "hub" of the internet, if that makes sense. It's no different than when companies like America On-Line tried to become the centre of the internet by forcing their customers into their walled-gardens in the 1990's. I'm calling it right now, sooner or later there will be a Netflix e-mail service! While I have no evidence for this, I'm fairly certain Reddit's new "games" push is a consequence of them going public on the stock exchange. Since Reddit now has a legal responsibility to bring back profits for their shareholders, they're willing to compromise the quality of their web site in exchange for whatever tiny sliver of advert revenue they can get. I'm personally not going to touch these games at all, even just for a test. You could say that's unfair, but I am not going to give those suits any sort of evidence that anybody is interested in their little games project at all. Damn you Reddit, for helping kill off independent internet message boards! Last Updated: March 9, 2026 Page Created: March 9, 2026 |
