Gargantuas are underrated, and it's a huge shame. They're my favourite alien enemy in Half-Life, alongside the Houndeye. They're huge, bulky creatures that can only be killed by something insanely powerful, like high amounts of electricity or boatloads of explosives. They shoot fire out of their hands! Not to mention that they just look evil. If you really pay attention to them, it looks like they're shooting a sinister grin. How are these guys not more popular? (Also they're blue, which is always a plus)

Their absence from Half-Life 2 is, in my opinion, a huge shame and a missed opportunity. They could've been used in so many scenarios to make the game even more chaotic. Imagine attacking Nova Prospekt with them, the Combine Gunship's laser gun doesn't seem to be powerful enough to penetrate the Gargantua's natural armour, so a Gargantua can wreck all of Nova Prospekt with ease. Not even an Antlion Guard would be able to take one of these beasts down.

And then imagine seeing Gargantuas roaming the streets during the Follow Freeman! Considering original story drafts for Half-Life 2 implied Gargantuas were roaming the wastelands outside the Combine controlled cities, it would be a cool way of showing that the Combine is slowly losing control of the city, while also making the entire fight even more crazy.

I appreciate how Black Mesa captured just how terrifying these creatures are. The Gargantua encounters in this game are much better than the original Half-Life's. I especially like what they did with the Gargantua chase in Interloper. Instead of one random Gargantua slowly searching for you, multiple Gargantuas chase you as you try to escape. Making the Gargantuas pack animals adds to their horrifying nature.

Part of me wishes they were one of the intelligent Xen creatures, rather than just a huge predator with animalistic instincts. I could totally see them being a huge help to the Resistance, particularly against Striders. It's easy to imagine the legs of a Strider being broken and ripped off by a Gargantua. Now that would make a cool scene!
