What is the Dusty Roses Update?
This is my dream Team Fortress 2 update. A western-themed
update which adds western-themed maps and new weapons for the Engineer.
Why is it named "Dusty Roses"?
Besides deserts being dusty, this update was named after
"DustyOldRoses" who was the voice actress for the FemSpy, FemEngineer, FemScout, and
Dr. Fisher (the female scientist from the Invasion Update trailer).
Why is it so small?
Presently, Team Fortress 2's current seasonal updates do
nothing but bloat the game with crummy new maps, cosmetics, unusual effects, etc. that
nobody even cares about after 2 weeks anyway. I specifically made this update to be
smaller and more in line with Team Fortress 2's old updates such as the Gold Rush Update.
I want to prioritise quality over quantity with Dusty Roses.
Why are there no cosmetics?
I actually had plans to include one cosmetic in this update,
but ultimately I didn't have the energy to put it all together. It would have
been a cowboy hat for the Engineer called "The Morgan" which would've been a sneaky
reference to Arthur Morgan (though I did consider making it "The Marston" too).
Trivia
The two maps featured in this update, Red Stead and
Tombstone Trail, were actually made in GoldSrc. It was quite tedious to import the
necessary texture files into GoldSrc, since Half-Life's textures don't really look
anything like Team Fortress 2 (shockingly) but I think what I ended up with looks
convincing enough. I know I could've used the Hammer Editor, which was included with
Team Fortress 2, but 1) I hate Hammer, outdated piece of trash, and 2) I am just more
comfortable with GoldSrc mapping than Source mapping.
I came up with the PeaceBreaker's stats while eating hot
dogs for lunch.
I was originally going to use the class portrait of the
Engineer next to the health on the HUD for this page, but I couldn't find it
anywhere, and I wasn't about to open up GCFScape and VTFEdit again just
to get the files. Damn Valve and their proprietary nonsense.
