If you're reading this, chances are you're interested in Web 1.0, A.K.A., "The Old Web", or "Old Net". For the uninformed, this was a time in the internet's history from the 1990's to the early 2000's. Most web sites from this time were simple, static, personal sites ran by individuals. These old sites usually used old HTML elements, GIF graphics, guestbooks, and were built using SSI/CGI, among other things. So what's the point of this page? To give people recommendations on what they can do to make their page look like it's from the Old Web era. Why do people like Web 1.0? If I had to guess (with some of my own personal beliefs), I'd say people like Web 1.0 because of how simple and personal it was. People today don't like the state of the internet because of how centralised, complex, and terrible it has become. We live in an era of the internet dominated by corporations and advertising, an era where only a few web sites hold near-total power over the whole internet. Not to mention that the internet today is filled with bots, so much so that currently, almost half of all internet traffic globally comes from bots. Web 1.0 isn't really about corporations, advertising, and bots. It's about individuals and their personal ideas. People want to see personal websites made by real individuals who have their own styles, rather than adhere to a company's standards. (Or they just really like the style) |
